A water bill that suddenly spikes is one of those things homeowners are tempted to brush off. Maybe it was a fluke. Maybe the meter is wrong. But more often than not, it means water is going somewhere it shouldn't - and in this case, it was leaking from the water main underground at this Herriman home.

Here's what we were working with: a 2012 build with a water main that had developed a hidden leak beneath the front yard. The homeowner had no idea until the bill showed up. That's the tricky thing about water main leaks - they can go on for weeks or months before anyone notices. By the time you feel it or see it, the ground has already been saturated and erosion can start eating away at your yard and foundation area.

One of the first things we focused on was protecting the property. We got a temporary line in place while we worked, which kept the household running with water and stopped the leak from doing any more damage to the yard. Plywood panels were laid down to protect the lawn and sidewalk areas from equipment traffic. That kind of detail matters - a water main repair shouldn't leave your yard looking like a construction zone any longer than it has to.

Inside, the new line was run clean and secure along the foundation wall with proper pipe supports and a quality shutoff valve installed at the entry point into the home. Everything was bracketed tight and seated right. On the exterior, once the work was done and the ground was restored, you'd barely know we were there. The yard was left clean, the turf was put back, and the repair was seamless.

A leaking water main isn't something to wait on. The longer it goes, the more water you're paying for - and the more damage builds up underground where you can't see it. If your water bill has jumped without a clear reason, that's your sign to get someone out to take a look.
